Countless
Broadway shows have gone on to become smash Hollywood films,
but rarely does one find a film that, almost thirty years
after its release, becomes a Broadway hit! Seven Brides for
Seven Brothers is that wonderful exception.
This high-spirited
stage version is based on the famous 1954 MGM movie, starring
Jane Powell and Howard Keel, which itsself was based on Stephen
Vincent Benet's poem The Sobbin' Women. The original songs
are Johnny Mercer and Gene de Paul, with new additions for
the stage by Oscar-winning songwriters Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhom.
The setting
is the 1850's Oregon wilderness. The brothers of the title
are Pontipees~ orphan farm boys. At the urgings of his six
younger brothers, Adam, the eldest, goes to town to search
for a bride. He meets Milly and after a whirlwind courtship,
the two agree to wed. Bursting with music and bubbling with
fun, this energetic musical ends happily.
One cast
member gushes: "Everyone come see Seven Brides for Seven
Brothers! There's a lot of talent in this musical, and it's
guaranteed to be good if Ann Kinnebrew (The Great) is directing!
